Aldergrove Kennels @ 856-DOGS.com is taking a unique approach to dog rescues and adopting dogs in the Vancouver Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley areas of BC. The approach is based on the social responsibilities of dog-ownership. In contrast to the emphasis placed on spaying and neutering by many rescues, our main goal is to ensure the suitability and compatibility of the dogs and their new homes.
More than twelve million dogs are destroyed in Canada and the U.S. every year. There are many reasons why, but the single biggest one is behaviour. Many adoptions fail because of a poor manner in how dogs are often acquired. Prior to adoption, more care must be taken to ensure that it’s a good dog and a good home. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the U.S.A. record between 5-6 million dog-bites every year. They report that the majority of injuries involve children under the age of twelve. These tragedies can be avoided by taking time to assess the dog’s temperaments and providing basic training for the dogs and owners.
Our services provide most, a better alternative in finding a good home for their dog or good dog for their home. Everyone wins… especially the dogs! Dog-owners faced with having to find a new home for their dog feel confident in knowing that their dog will be professionally trained and placed in a good home. New owners receive private instruction to assist in promoting proper handling and care. And we get to do what we do best… find good homes, for good dogs.
We accept all purebred dogs and crossbreeds, but they must have good health and temperament. Dogs are accepted only on the condition that they receive three weeks of basic obedience and kennel training. With so many dogs competing for good homes, the training that we provide is the key to their success as well as ours. Simply, a well-trained dog has a far greater chance of finding a good home.
We charge a fee of $40.00/day for a minimum of 21-days for care and training. Who pays the fee is based on the adoptability of the dog. Humans are value-based creatures and they won’t pay the same for an older crossbreed, as they will for a young popular purebred. In order to maintain a realistic adoption fee for a potential new home, the older the dog, the greater the fee the party surrendering the dog has to pay. The more that is sponsored, the better the chances. In any case, new owners always pay a minimum adoption fee of $159.00 which includes private handling lessons.
If you are interested in adopting a dog, please provide us with a description of the type and age of dog that you would like. Also indicate the maximum amount, if any, that you would be willing to sponsor towards training of a dog. We could have a suitable candidate available or would contact you when and if we found one. If you would prefer acquiring a purebred puppy, we have a link to DOGS IN CANADA on our web site under BREEDERS or you can contact us for a list of local litters, including crossbreeds of all sizes.
If you need to find a good home for your dog, there is no cost or obligation to have your dog evaluated for acceptance into our program. Prior to making an appointment for the evaluation, we first have to confirm with a Veterinarian that your dog has no health or temperament issues that would be of concern to a new owner.
Please contact us if you wish to arrange an appointment to view any of the dogs that we currently have available or have your own dog evaluated for adoption.
