The SPCA reports that approximately 50% of the dogs surrendered to their shelters are destroyed because of problem canine aggressions. This phenomenon occurs needlessly, as most canine aggression problems are preventable. The majority of puppy-aggression and dog-aggression problems are environmentally caused as opposed to being inherent. Proactively training puppies from the earliest possible age is the ideal way to avoid natural canine aggressions from becoming problem aggressions. However, once an aggression problem is established, it can never be extinguished, it can only be managed. Fortunately, it’s never too late to teach old dogs new tricks! Prevention eliminates the need for correction and established problem canine aggressions can be safely managed with appropriate training and management.
