You can’t send your dog to law school and expect him to become a Doctor. If you want a dog to behave a certain way as an adult, you must promote exactly what you want from the start. Contrary to what you may have heard, the ideal time to train a dog is prior to 4-months of age. This is known as the imprinting period. Some people think that puppies have short attention spans, but they learn very quickly. Once a dog learns something, it can be very difficult and sometimes impossible to change. If you have a good recipe to follow, you can get it right the first time. If you don't, you could end up being your own worst enemy, not to mention your dogs'.
Behaviour is the single biggest reason why more than 12-million dogs are destroyed in North America annually. Unfortunately, many people acquire dogs without understanding that training and management is the most important aspect of owning a dog. In most cases, those selling dogs neglect to inform buyers of the true responsibility they are undertaking. Those lacking the basic skills required to properly train and manage a dog often become frustrated trying to teach their dogs what not to do instead of focusing-on what to do. Preventing problems is much easier than correcting them.
There are many antiquated methods and lots of free advice, but if it's wrong, it could cost you and your dog plenty. Positive training methods can correctly deal with common problems such as jumping and nipping without teaching your dog to fear you. Punishment can ruin a dog for life. Simply, if training can be effectively accomplished without having to use negative methods, why should one attempt to train a dog any other way?
We do not offer nor recommend any type of instruction that requires owners to be dog-trainers. Every dog is different and needs individual attention to training. What works well for one dog may be ineffective or even harmful for another. Consequently, group-classes are definitely not appropriate for every dog or dog-owner. They offer little or no consideration to individual needs. People who are new to dog ownership are expected to play the role of dog-trainers after their first hour of instruction. You can imagine why so many fail. Having your dog professionally trained paves-the-way for all - especially the dog. Just as a person can acquire a driver’s license without having to be an auto-mechanic, we can train your dog, show you how to handle it, and you don’t have to be a dog-trainer.
We currently feature 5-in-house training packages. Each package includes private instruction for the family, Extra Special Care Boarding or Extra Special Daycare, daily in-house training plus a shampoo & blow-dry! The whole family is welcome to attend the lessons but one person should be the designated handler. Additional lessons may be purchased as required including an evaluation & consultation if you would like to preview our training prior to leaving your dog.
If you missed-out on the opportunity of training your dog as a puppy, it’s never too late to get on the right track. You can always improve things with proper training and better management. Simply, if your dog is always doing the right thing, it can’t be doing anything wrong. Good luck and always remember, it's never too late to teach an old dog new tricks. Just ask me.
